Reading Notes: Week 2 Anthology

The Giant Crab, and Other Tales from Old India by W. H. D. Rouse.

   Goblin City

This story was my favorite of them all and I felt like it stood out the most. In this story, it discusses that there was a large city of she-goblins inhabiting an island sometime in the past. One day a ship of sailors crashed ashore the goblin island. The goblins pulled some trickery in order to fool the sailors into thinking everything was normal on the island. The she-goblins convinced the sailors to all marry them with the ulterior motive of locking them away and eating them.  One night when all the sailors would sleep the she-goblins woke and headed towards their prison and killed and ate a few men. One sailor in particular became knowledgeable of what was going on. He did this by pretending to be asleep as his wife (she-goblin) would come and go. One night when he was pretending he looked out of the corner of his eye and noticed her devouring a man. After, he had the terrifying realization that the she-goblins were eating men and that they were powerless against the goblins and could not sail away on their boat. He later began to tell the rest of the sailors and some were in a little bit of disbelief. Then to their dismay, a fairy which had hate for the goblins wanted to save the men. The fairy with her flying horse arrived to carry away the men. Even though it did not look like it the horse was able to load every man possible and took them safely home. The ones who stayed behind were killed and eaten by the goblins the following night.
