Part B: The Gambling Match
  • Duryodhana knew he cold not overcome the Pandavas in open conflict 
  • He plotted with his people to accomplish their fall by artifice
  • Shakhuni plays with loaded dice and is renowned for his skill as a gambler
  • Duryodhana went to his father and requested that he plan a friendly gambling match
  • Pandava brethren were at first reluctant to the gambling match but came to pass and journeyed to Hastinapura
  • All the princes and great chieftains gathered at a pavilion decorated by gold and lapis lazuli for the gambling match
  • Yudhishthira announced that having been challenged they cannot withdraw and wanted to know who claims this challenge 
  • Doryodhana announced he will provide the stakes but his uncle Shakuni will throw the dice
  • Yudhishthira exclaimed that this request is odd and different from normal practice but will abide by these rules
  • Rajah of Inda. Knew the match would not be played fairly but decided to throw dice with Shakuni
  • Yudhishthira lost at every Dow and gambled away all of his jewels, money, chariot, cattle, but continued to play on
  • He lost war elephants, slaves, beautiful slave girls, and his whole kingdom of Pandavas despite the advice given to him by his chieftains
  • He staked himself and lost
  • Shakuni told him since he staked himself he is now a slave but if he stakes Draupadi now and win all lost will be restored 
  • Draupadi was won by Duryodhana 
  • Duryodhana announced for her to come sweep the chambers with the other bonds women
  • Vidura was furious and said that technically Drapaudi is not your slave because Yudhi. Staked his own freedom before he staked Draupadi and so therefore he could have no power to stake the princess
  • Duryodhana cursed Vidura and claimed for one of his servants to bring Draupadi before him as he will make her of royal birth a household slave
